Aloha my fellow adventurers & supporters, there is a new adventure calling my name: OVERLANDING and the journey begins today.
Well, we aren’t leaving today, but the prep starts today. It’s kinda a big deal. (for us.)
I even started a separate blog specifically dedicated to this journey but I will be linking all posts through my martinis website so no worries; it won’t be more work to vicariously join us.
When I say ‘us’, I mean: Chris, my dashing boyfriend, Mauka, my incredibly adorable beagle-walker hound puppy and I.
We are planning an Overlanding trip for the summer of 2016 for a two week test through NY, Canada & Chicago but the real test will be in the spring of 2017. Together we will take on several months of Overlanding from Key West to Anchorage exploring natural treasures during the day and camping at the parks by night.
Since I am a world traveler and Chris is an avid outdoorsman, we could not think of a better way to celebrate him getting out of the Navy after 9 years of service in March 2017 with a good ‘ol American Road trip. Together, Chris and I have traveled the surrounding 6 states & Hawaii and ready for more!
We will be testing our knowledge, skills, determination and yes, even our relationship.
Coool, but what the heck is Overlanding?
“Overlanding describes self-reliant adventure travel to remote destinations where the journey is the primary goal. Typically, but not exclusively, accommodated by mechanized off-highway capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping; often lasting for extended lengths of time (months to years) and often spanning international boundaries. While expedition is defined as a journey with a purpose, overlanding sees the journey as the purpose.” http://www.overlandjournal.com/overlanding/what_is_overlanding/
In short: Taking a truck-camper to the most remote places off the beaten path and living economically out of a moving home.
Why Does the Prep Start today?
We have 521 days until launch there is no better time then today to start preparing. Over the next 1.5 years we will be paying off all debts, taking survival safety courses, building up our savings, creating recurring income, custom making the truck into a proper Overlanding vehicle, conditioning the puppy, purchasing all the REI gear we can afford, testing our packing/preparation skills and I have to learn to drive a manual, Eeek.
As much as I want to rush the 521 days, we really need all 500+ days we have left.
We have mapped out 14k miles and over 50 stops on http://www.roadtrippers.com. We will keep you updated on the process, challenges and we are DEFIANTLY taking suggestions for local secret hot spots. Please comment your suggestions!
